  • Use only STERILE, dry wide mouthed, leak proof, screw capped plastic container (about 30 ml) to collect urine for culture & sensitivity.
  • Urine sample for culture & sensitivity should be ideally given before starting any antibiotic treatment. Kindly consult your physician for further information. The medicines taken should be documented in the TRF, if any.
  • Collect first early morning, midstream, clean catch urine sample.
  • However, sample collected during the day can also be given if advised by physician.
  • Wash the hand with soap and water.
  • It is important to clean the genitalia before collecting urine.
  • To reduce the contamination, the specimen submitted for urine culture & sensitivity should be clean catch ‘midstream’ sample.
  • Void first portion of urine into toilet. Collect midstream portion into urine container. Do not touch the inside of the urine container.
  • Stop collection when container is about half full.
  • Screw the cap on container tightly. The sample should not get mixed with tap water or faeces.
  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Keep the sample in dedicated tray.
  • In case of >3 times of colonies indicative of contamination is detected, a repeat sample will be requested.
Specimens Rejection:
Urine collected in leaky/ unsterile / unlabelled container or from urinals, bedpans, bags of catheterized patients.
